#16: Nuttin' but Remix for Christmas

Remix 1.8

The Remix team is steadily progressing in the effort to fold the React Router codebase back into Remix. The latest release includes another milestone: the new framework-agnostic router handles all server-side data fetches and mutations. A recent tweet from Santa Florence indicates that your Remix stockings might be stuffed with a completed React Router migration. If you’re curious about the final stages of the migration, there’s a public GitHub project board tracking the work.

This release also includes an opt-in feature for the new meta API for Remix v2. The new API no longer implicitly merges meta tags from parent routes (you’ll need to do this manually if desired). Also, the previous API attempted to smooth over differences between some meta tag standards. While the automatic features made some use cases much more straightforward, they also made some meta tags impossible to express.

For more details, you can read the full release notes for v1.8.0.

They grow up so fast.

It’s officially been over a year since Remix was open-sourced, and several community efforts are celebrating birthdays. Remix.guide turned one a few days ago and celebrated by announcing a new RSS Feed. This newsletter is a year old now as well!

As Remix grows in popularity and influence, it’s increasingly important to maintain strong communication with the community. That’s why the Remix team announced Open Development for Remix, detailing their plans for public roadmaps, open development processes, and roadmap planning live streams.

Ryan and Michael hosted the first Roadmap Planning a few days ago, and this will likely be a weekly occurrence. Keep an eye on the Remix YouTube channel or in Discord for announcements, but if they continue the same cadence, then future streams are probably on Mondays around 10 AM PT.

Webpack is invited to the Christmas party.

If you have an application that you are longing to migrate to Remix but have been blocked by a lack of Webpack support, fret no more. The team has just announced an official migration path. The article clearly states this is only for migrating to Remix, and developers should avoid using this capability unless necessary for migration. It’s exciting to see lower barriers to Remix adoption, especially for existing codebases.

Remix Conf EU and Beyond

Remix Conf EU is in the books, and the recordings are starting to release. The talks may be found in this Youtube playlist or directly from GitNation. The rest should become available around December 19th, but there are several great presentations to watch while you wait:

By the way: If you’d like to speak at Remix Conf 2023 (the US version), the call for speakers is now open.

Errata

  • In the previous issue of this newsletter, while reporting Shopify’s acquisition of Remix, we erroneously stated that Shopify had recently laid off approximately ten thousand employees. This number is incorrect, and the actual number is closer to one thousand. Shopify had about ten thousand employees and laid off roughly ten percent of its workforce. We have corrected the online archives of the newsletter.
